What is a Claude Code skill and how do I install one?

A Claude Code skill is a SKILL.md file — a markdown document with a name, a description, and instructions that teach Claude how to perform a specific task. To install one, drop the SKILL.md into a named folder inside ~/.claude/skills/ (for example ~/.claude/skills/context-budgeter/SKILL.md). How much do the Claude 5 models cost to run?

Fable 5 — Anthropic's most capable model — is $10 in / $50 out per million tokens. Opus 5 and Opus 4.8 are $5 / $25. Sonnet 5 is $3 / $15, and Haiku 4.5 is $1 / $5. Cached input runs about 10% of the standard input rate on every model, so treating the 1M window as a warm cache instead of a one-shot prompt cuts per-query cost dramatically. The original constitution-trained assistant, then Claude 2 with a 100K context window when most of the industry was working with a few thousand tokens. Long context was this family's instinct from the start — the whole premise of this farm traces back here.

March 2024 · The family forms

Claude 3 — Haiku, Sonnet, Opus

The three-tier family is born: fast, balanced, deep. Vision arrives. For the first time you could pick your model like you pick a tool — the exact idea our budgeter is built on.

2024 · The workhorse

Claude 3.5 Sonnet

The model that made "Claude writes my code" a normal sentence. Mid-tier price, top-tier output — it taught the industry that the best model isn't always the biggest one, a lesson our budgeter encodes to this day.

February 2025 · The pause that thinks

Claude 3.7 Sonnet

Extended thinking — the first Claude that could reason visibly before answering. Every "thinking budget" and effort dial that followed descends from this release.
